Flora & Fauna

Week 3: Photography

White Rose: 1-26-2010; 2:11pm; Floral Shoppe, Rexburg; f 4.9; 1/32; Nikon Coolpix L1; handheld
Purple Flower: 1-26-2010; 2:12pm; Floral Shoppe, Rexburg; f 4.9; 1/32; Nikon Coolpix L1; handheld
Frasier: 1-24-2010: 10:34pm; Rexburg, Id; f 2.9; 1/32; Nikon Coolpix L1; handheld
Chipmunk: 8-19-2008; 4:49pm; Jackson Hole, WY; f 5.6; 1/125; Cannon EOS 30D; handheld

White Rose and Purple Flower were both taken at the Floral Shoppe in Rexburg. I turned on my macro close-up setting and adjusted my flash to be duller. I got up close to capture a good image. Frasier is my aunt and uncle’s dog. I captured this image by bribing the dog with treats to make her look at me. The chipmunk was a cool shot because the little guy would just walk right up to me and let me feed him peanuts. This picture was taken after about 12 peanuts into his mouth in a row. I did not even have to zoom to get it!

Adjustment Layers & Smart Filter

Week 3: Image Edit

Flowers
Flowers Unedited: 1-26-2010; 2:15pm; Floral Shoppe, Rexburg; f 4.9; 1/32; Nikon Coolpix L1; handheld
Lincoln Memorial
Lincoln Memorial Unedited: 12-30-2009; 6:38pm; Washington, DC; f 6.3; 1/200; Sony DSC-S600; handheld

For edited Flowers I first converted original image to a smart layer. Added Poster edges smart layer (Edge thickness: 8; Edge intensity: 4; Posterization: 0). Then Used the paintbrush tool to make the flower back to its original look. Added a lighting effect to make the real looking flower stand out more. Then added text overtop all layers. For the edited Lincoln Memorial I added levels adjustment layer. Used multiply blending mode. Masked to make the color look better in the sky and on the memorial using the paintbrush tool. Then added text over top all layers.

Landscape & Still Life

Week 2: Photography

Hitch: 1-16-2010; 11:45am; R Mountain, ID; f 4.5; 1/250; Kodak Easy Share ZD710; handheld
Bear: 1-19-2010; 3:30pm; Grandparent’s house, ID; f 3.2; 1/320; Kodak Easy Share ZD710; handheld
Field: 1-18-2010; 4:45pm; Driggs, ID; f 2.8; 1/320; Sony DSC-S600; used car for balance
Targhee: 1-18-2010; 4:15pm; Targhee; f 6.3; 1/1000; Sony DSC-S600; handheld

These pictures were all taken throughout the weekend. I put each of them into the HDR program to make them look more interesting. Hitch was taken while out shooting near R Mountain. Bear was taken at my grandparents house in Rexburg, they had it made out of their old pine tree near their house. Field was taken in Driggs, Idaho on the way back from a ski trip to Targhee. Targhee was taken up in Targhee just as the snow lifted.

When I was over at my grandparents house taking pictures I told my Grandpa that I was taking still life pictures of inanimate objects. He said "Oh! Take a picture of me!" So I did.

Blending & Type Effects

Week 2: Image Edit

Lincoln Memorial: 12-30-2009; 6:15pm; Washington, DC.; f 5.1; 1/160; Sony DSC-S600; handheld
Flag: 1-19-2010; 2:00pm; Walmart Parking lot, Rexburg; f 7.1; 1/400; Sony DSC-S600; used car as tripod
Dream: 1-19-2010; 1:30pm; My Bedroom; f 3.8; 1/59; Nikon Coolpix; handheld

I merged these images together using the opacity change tool as well as using an overlay. I ran the Lincoln Memorial picture through an HDR program to make the colors stand out more through the other pictures. I boosted the curves on the flag to also have a more dramatic color. I used the opacity tool to lower the opacity of the flag to 30% so the Memorial could show through. I then added the word dream (which is actually a picture of vinyl lettering on my dresser) and made that an overlay. I finished with adding text on top of everything.

Study in Blue

Week 1: Photography

Temple: 12-30-2009; 7:30pm; Washington, DC; f 2.8; 1/10; sat on a trashcan
Flower: 1-10-2010; 9:35pm; Rexburg, ID; f 2.8; 1/60
Clouds: 8-13-06: 2:45pm; Grand Canyon; n/a; n/a
Mountains: 7-15-06; 4:30; Jackson, WY; f 5.0; 1/200; sat on a rock with timer

I took this picture of Washington, DC over the Christmas Break (my boyfriend had taken this class last semester and told me that I was going to need a picture of a color). Because it was the holiday season they were projecting different colors onto the temple and I was able to capture this picture in blue. My roommate bought a bouquet of Gerber daises to make our apartment look pretty. I took a picture of the blue one because I thought it looked really pretty. The picture of the Grand Canyon was taken years ago. I wanted to capture an image of the sky, because when you are standing at the edge of the Grand, the sky is massive. The last picture I took in Jackson during the summer. I set the camera on a rock with a timer. I took several pictures and ended up with this one (with a few minor edits).

Cutouts

Week 1: Image Edit

1. Water Bottle Unedited: 9-30-09; 4:30pm – Sandy, Utah; f 3.5; 1/250; Sony DSC-H50
2. Water Bottle Edited: Complete cutout with the quick selection tool then refined edges on white

I took this picture while on a hike in the mountains near the church rock quarry just outside Sandy, Utah. To make this edit I used the quick selection tool to select the water bottle then selected inverse and deleted the background. I then reselected the water bottle and refined the edges.
